The novel “Karamazov Brothers” was written in 1880s. Deep psychological insight, originality and distinctness of character’s personalities and situations are typical of Dostoyevsky’s works. The writer once again addresses the problems and difficulties of a “little man”. Victor Rozov faultlessly managed to find the right way of staging the great writer’s prose work. Not simply he transferred the words and actions of the novel’s characters on to the stage, but also presented us the result of an accurate analyses of the character’s personalities and their motivations through his own prism of mental outlook. The type of boys that Rozov presented on theatre’s staged are now recognized as Rozov’s boys. They confronted life with childishly simple questions, and may be due to that very simplicity and innocence the life around them started to change. All of them were optimists, had clear notion of life, close to that of Rozov’s, who never had doubts of whether something was bad or good, and was always straight about it. While staging the show the director Uriy Osherov leaned upon his ideas that art should appeal to consciousness, kindness and beauty. Although the plot is related to the 19th century the play is still very up to date: issues of teenager’s cruelty and poverty are topical in Russia even today.
The action takes place in a province town Skotoprigonievsk (literally “animal stock”) in 1880s.
