The premiere show of the play “The Inspector General” by Gogol’s comedy took place in Saratov Kiselev Youth Theatre on the 4th of June 2009.

Some unforeseen before outlines and points of Gogol’s work were revealed in by means of connecting Bychkov’s (the director) edgy seeing of the play with Kiselev’s theatre old school. The show witty and unobtrusively informs spectators that on each city governor there will be found an inspector general. The play directed by Bychkov is also curious because of a natural union of actors’ decisions, effects of light scenography and costumes.

Michael Bychkov is a director and a former student of a distinguished pedagogue M.O. Knebel. Shows under his direction have been continually presenting our theatre in Germany, Ireland, Check Republic, Poland, Great Britain, Holland. Bychkov is also the founder and general artistic director of the Voronezh Chamber Theatre, Stanislavsky’s Prize and two “The Golden Masks” laureate. The stage director of the show is Uriy Kharikhov – also Stanislavsky’s Prize and “The Golden Mask” laureate. And “The Inspector General” is not the first play staged by Kharikhov in Saratov Kiselev Youth Theatre.

N.V. Gogol (1809-1852) was a Ukrainian-born Russian novelist, humorist, and dramatist. His early works, such as Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka, were heavily influenced by his Ukrainian upbringing and identity.

He is considered the father of modern Russian realism. His writing satirized the corrupt bureaucracy of the Russian Empire, leading to his exile. On his return, he immersed himself in the Orthodox Church. The novels Taras Bul'ba (1835; 1842 [revised edition]) and Dead Souls (1842), the play The Inspector-General (1836, 1842), and the short stories Diary of a Madman, The Nose and The Overcoat (1842) are among his best known works. With their scrupulous and scathing realism, ethical criticism as well as philosophical depth, they remain some of the most important works of world literature.
