On the threshold of the 150 anniversary of the Great Russian writer A.P. Chekhov’s birthday Saratov Academic Kiselev Youth Theater prepared the premiere of the performance “The Lady with a Dog”, based on the famous story. This love story Chekhov wrote in 1899, at the turn of two centuries – 19th and 20th. In his works of these period Chekhov became an explorer of the souls of modern people. One remark in Chekhov's notes says “A person would be better when you show him what he is like”, it tells about the author’s thoughts, about faith in people and in truth of their art representation.
Two people met each other while being at the seaside resort; both their lives are boring and awkward. Anna Sergeyevna married her husband because of curiosity and now despises him, calling him “a lackey”; Gurov doesn’t love his wife, he thinks she is ceremonious and narrow-minded, he is cheating on her for quite some time. Love changes both, it opens another dimension, making them to live to the full extent of their strength, not mechanically as they used to.
The idea of the graduation performance was born from the student’s work on scenic speech. A try of two actors to read Chekhov’s story grew in the end into a theatre performance in the genre of Literature Theater. It’s a complicated genre, which was undeservingly left behind in the modern theater. The main character in the performance is a “flesh” of Chekhov’s story. Young teaching-directors managed to preserve all the Chekhov’s text. And in spite of the fact that anyone in Russia is familiar with the story since the school years in this graduation performance the story shows its unusual side.
